During COVID19 visiting has been restricted accross the hospital and with schools closed often parents have other children to care for at home. So being at their baby's side 24 hours a day may not always be possible. When parents call the Special Care Baby Unit to get updates our clinical teams can now step in and send parents secure video updates of their child, from the unit directly to parents’ smartphones with the help of a secure video messaging service called vCreate using newly donated Ipads.
Regular video updates provide reassurance and help minimise separation anxiety and can help to comfort worried parents and their extended family. They have been a wonderful asset to our unit as they have helped to bridge the gap between the parents and babies, especially through the night.
